What is coaching?

The International Coaching Federation defines coaching as: partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential. Coaching honors the client as the expert in his/her life and work and believes that every client is creative, resourceful, and whole.
 
Standing on this foundation, the coach’s responsibility is to:
•Discover, clarify, and align with what the client wants to achieve 

•Encourage client self-discovery 

•Elicit client-generated solutions and strategies 

•Hold the client responsible and accountable 


​Is coaching just another form of counseling?

While it is easy to see the two fields as similar, coaching is quite different from counseling. The two can be compared to one another as much as a podiatrist and a neurologist can – sure, both are in the medical profession, but they are working on two completely different ends of the spectrum.
 
Coaching and counseling are two very different, very distinct fields. A coach helps their client work toward goals – toward growth – toward a focus on the future. A coach helps their client find and strengthen their skills inside of an alliance that is focused and targeted on future goals.
 
Counselors help clients who suffer from some sort of emotional or mental ailment. The counselor is there to help their client heal their wounds. The counseling relationship is typically focused on the past so that the client can be healed, having a better present. The coaching relationship focuses on the present and the future so that each current thought and action can be in greater alignment with where the client is headed in their future. 

Who can benefit from working with a coach?

Simply put: Everyone. There is not an area in life that cannot benefit from forming an alliance with a life coach. I would, however, recommend ensuring that you are relatively healthy, emotionally stable, and ready to work toward your goals. Working with a coach requires a commitment to change and a willingness to do the hard work.
 
As a coach, I work with women who are looking to rediscover their passion, purpose, and playfulness. The women who come to me for coaching have typically found themselves in a rut, tired of fighting the same battles inside of their lives day in and day out, and ready to finally make some progress toward effective and productive living. What areas of my life can we work on during our coaching sessions?

In short, every area that is inside of your life can be worked on inside of the coaching alliance. We can work on your communication skills, organization, health & wellness, time management, business goals, career performance, and whatever else you decide needs focus at the moment. I’m a firm believer that all the areas in our lives are interconnected. Our work affects our home which affects our physical health, which affects our mental health, which affects our organization, which affects our relationships, which affects our overall sense of peace — and everything in between. Our lives and everything inside of them are connected.  
 
Disclaimer: While every part of our life is relevant to the coaching alliance, there are certain aspects that reach beyond the scope of our alliance. Any clinical disorder, such as depression or severe anxiety, will not be worked through in coaching. Clinical disorders such as these and others require clinical intervention by specialist who are trained specifically to work with you. Once these issues have been resolved or upon the approval of your supervising clinician, we can begin or resume coaching. As your coach, I truly want what is best for you, and this is for your protection. 

Is the information I share with you confidential?

Absolutely. The information discussed and discovered in our coaching alliance will be held to the strictest standards of confidentiality. Information will not be shared except where all participants have given express written consent or where required by law.
